Yearly Oral Health Reminders: Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

Have you ever heard of sedation dentistry? Sedation dentistry has been known to help with numerous ailments and issues arising with your oral health care and can lower your risk for dental anxiety and any other issues you may have when visiting a dentist office for an oral health care treatment.

There are four main types of dental sedation that are common. The first one is an inhaled sedation which occurs through the inhalation of a gas substance, typically nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is highly effective at calming a patient and relaxing them for any oral health care treatments they may need.

For a stronger sedative to ensure an individual feels no pain or falls asleep, oral sedation, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia can be used. Although ingesting a pill for an oral sedation often takes up to an hour, the dosage levels can be altered for the desired level of sedation. Similarly, intravenous sedation works the same way, but the effect is instantaneous. With general anesthesia, a person can be put into a deep sleep from which they want to wait until the anesthesia wears off.
